Giving Back

Teddy Davis learned in the fall of 2004 that of the more than five million people registered with the National Marrow Donor Program, his tissue was the closest match for a one-year old baby boy who was suffering from hemaphagocytosis—a rare abnormality of the bone marrow in which white blood cells destroy the red blood cells. Teddy and Emily had joined the network of potential bone marrow donors one year earlier.

On February 18, 2005, bone marrow was harvested from the back of Teddy’s pelvic bone by Dr. Roy Beveridge at Inova Fairfax Hospital in northern Virginia.

After being transported by plane, the marrow was transplanted the next day and successfully engrafted.

A year later, the baby died from other complications. Teddy's thoughts and prayers are with the baby's family.
